Leather, Larceny, and Late Night Laughs: Sinvention Makes the News — and the Jokes!

It’s not every day a boutique kink shop makes it onto Late Night with Seth Meyers, but thanks to a recent break-in at Sinvention in Stratford, Ontario, Canada, the beloved leather gear makers found themselves the punchline of a very unexpected gag. Thankfully, even the folks behind the counter at Sinvention saw the humor in it.

But behind the laughs was a serious incident. In the early hours of May 23, two masked individuals smashed through the front door of the Sinvention store and made off with about $8,000 worth of high-end leather gear, cash, and adult accessories.

“We certainly weren’t expecting to have to restock half our store in a day,” co-owner Julie Bell told CTV News. “That’s a big hit for small businesses.”

Sinvention’s intimate products — many of them handcrafted on-site — aren’t the sort of items that are easily replaced. Still, within just days, the Stratford Police Service had identified suspects and recovered a significant portion of the stolen items.

“We really didn’t expect much from the investigation,” Bell told CTV News. “I was glad to hear there would be a couple of people held accountable.”

While some items remain unrecovered, Sinvention has already stepped up its security measures, installing additional alarms and surveillance systems. And through it all, the team has kept a sense of humor.

“It was perhaps maybe a little bit more interesting subject matter than [police] may be used to dealing with, so I think there’s a lot of enthusiasm to get closure for us,” Bell told CTV News.

For those who don’t already know, Sinvention is more than just a leather boutique, it’s a cornerstone of the kink community in Canada and beyond. Founded in the 1990s by two passionate artisans, Sinvention has grown from leather “experiments” in a family-run saddlery into a global name in premium bondage gear, celebrated for its attention to detail, quality craftsmanship, and ethical materials.

Whether you’re visiting their Stratford boutique or shopping online, Sinvention offers a thoughtfully curated collection of handmade leather gear, accessories, and pleasure products designed with kink in mind. With deep roots in the heterosexual kink, gay, and BDSM communities, the company has always stood proudly for craftsmanship, inclusivity, and sexual self-expression.

As Sinvention continues to bounce back from this costly disruption, their message is clear: They’re still here, they’re still kinky, and they’re still crafting gear worth owning!

Some recent articles in the news featuring lockup and lockdown

I’ve blogged about the infamous Stanford Prison Experiment a number of times before. For those who are not familiar, it was a prison role-play “experiment” conducted back in the 1970s with male college students, who were divided into groups of guards and prisoners. The experiment quickly went off the rails and had to be ended early. The guards got too sadistic and the prisoners too rebellious. There is tons of literature about this in psychology textbooks and at least one movie. This article revisiting the experiment appeared in today’s New York Times and caught my eye — especially the picture! The gist of the article is that the academic psychological community would not allow such an experiment to be conducted again today. And this is a shame, because I think re-doing the experiment again — with a better facility and better planning — would be fucking hot! I wish someone would volunteer to write a story based on this, for the Metalbond Prison Library! Reach out to me if you are interested.

In other recent news, Squirm of Rubberzone passed along this link to a story about a man in Washington state who broke into an escape room and then called 911 when he could not get out! What do you guys think of the escape room craze? Who among us has participated? Again I think this would make a great story for the Prison Library!

Adam Rippon in a leather harness

One of the surest ways to draw lots of attention to one’s self is to wear something outrageous to the Oscars. Yesterday on the Red Carpet, Adam Rippon delivered!

The openly gay U.S. Olympic bronze medal winning figure skater wore a black leather harness to the Academy Awards! Fucking hot if you ask me! I can’t tell if this means Adam is expressing an interest in leather/BDSM, or perhaps it is more of a fashion statement. I suspect it’s probably more of the latter. In keeping with the spirit of the Oscars, it’s high-fashion — “a Moschino look by from Jeremy Scott,” according to this article on the Vogue magazine website.

Whether Adam is kinky or not, I still think he is fabulous. I grew up watching the Olympics but never, ever saw anyone out and proud — until this year, thanks to him and openly gay U.S. Olympic skier Gus Kenworthy.

Now that Adam has worn leather, I would very much like to see Gus in a leather harness — hopefully one from Mr S!
