Highly recommended — ‘Mapplethorpe: Look at the Pictures’

I caught this new documentary recently down at Cinema Village on 12th Street, and I really liked it. It’s got some fantastic interviews with his family, his lovers and many others. They talk about New York’s gay leather/BDSM scene in the 1970s, the Mineshaft, Drummer magazine, and lots more. Here’s the trailer:

I have a much greater appreciation of Mapplethorpe as an artist, having seen this most excellent tribute. See this if you can.

The film’s official website is here.

Mapplethorpe Foundation here.

Would you rather be a guard or a prisoner?

Hey, how many of you guys ever heard of the Stanford Prison Experiment? This really happened back in the early 1970s, and I remember it being covered in a psychology class I took in college. The experiment was aborted because it got too intense. Now, there is a new movie coming out about it. Here’s the trailer:

In my own personal view, this experiment was conducted very poorly and the professor in charge of the whole thing was really a kook, but I’m definitely going to see this when it comes out.

This was also documented quite extensively in this BBC documentary, and on the Stanford Instructional Television Network.

There was also a fictional movie on the same theme, called Das Experiment.

Good movie: ‘Do I Sound Gay?’

I just got back from seeing the thought-provoking documentary ‘Do I sound Gay?’ with my friend nycslave4training. It’s definitely a must-see. Here’s the trailer:

There is also something of interest to “guys like us” in this movie. In addition to hearing from the likes of Dan Savage, George Takei, Tim Gunn, Don Lemon and many others, the movie features a brief yet memorable glimpse of what happens at the Folsom Street East fair here in New York City! Our own Sir Dart of the popular Dart’s Domain site is briefly interviewed, and he is also shown tying  up Bro Doppel in rope and body punching him. In another brief scene, our own Master Tip is shown flogging one of his slaves.

‘Prison System 4614’ (German: ‘Haftanlage 4614’)

You guys have to check this out! It’s a documentary film called “Prison System 4614” (German: “Haftanlage 4614”) that is playing in Berlin as part of the International Film Festival in Berlin (Berlinale) that is going on right now! It’s about a private prison where paying guests can get locked up. The description reads in part,

“Even when using the whip these ‘torturers’ never forget to be humane and, in spite of their tough prison warder guise, they are fully aware, in a way that is almost caring, of their responsibility for those in ‘detention.’”

The film is directed by Jan Soldat.

More information about “Prison System 4614” (German: “Haftanlage 4614”), including show times, is available here and here.

ALSO: The director, Jan Soldat, also made a documentary film about Klaus, a man and his desire to live as slave.

Metal would like to thank RH of Mencomix for passing this along.
