I left a pair of engraved cuffs on Houdini’s grave

engraved handcuffs on Houdini grave

Houdini died on this day today (Halloween, Oct. 31) back in 1926, in Detroit, and this afternoon (Halloween day, 2018) I paid a visit to his gravesite in Queens, New York.

Houdini rests amongst his relatives in an elaborate family plot at Machpelah Cemetery in Glendale. From Manhattan, it was an hour-long trip on the subway and then a 20-minute hike.

As a tribute to Houdini, I left a pair of police-issue Smith and Wesson Model 100-1 handcuffs that I had specially engraved with his name. I made sure to double-lock the cuffs before leaving them.

Hallowe’en by lthr_jock

“Shane, seriously, why are we doing this?”

The 6-foot-tall blond looked at his shorter friend. “I don’t even want to go to the damn party.”

Pete put his hand on his friend’s shoulder. “Like I said, Mary will be there and this is your final chance.” The two stood beside each other looked like an advert for clean living. Both were well built and healthy, both with unruly blond hair. Shane and Pete had been friends since they started school. Now, at the age of 20, they were back in town on a visit. Both had gone off to the same university and were taking a short break to visit their families. Their quiet visit had been interrupted when Shane spotted an old flame and spent the evening moping about her. Pete had come up with the idea of them attending the local Hallowe’en Party in the hope that it would cheer Shane up.

“Yeah, yeah, but she isn’t going to go for me with me wearing some damn costume.”

“But you have to be in costume to get in. Seriously, Shane, she’ll appreciate you’ve gone to some effort.”

Shane sighed and pushed open the door to the Costume Shop. The shop hadn’t been there when they were at school and the pair had spotted it by accident as they were wandering around looking for inspiration.

Planning for a Halloween Party

By Mister-X/Spartan

That house was a natural for hosting a Halloween party. It was really creepy looking. It had been built many years ago, an old Victorian relic. It sat on top of a hill on the outskirts of town. It looked like a copy of the house in that Hitchcock movie “Psycho.” The only problem was that the owner, the guy who lived there, was just as mysterious as the house itself.

Bobby and I had been discussing approaching the owner with Willie. We wondered if the owner would be interested in having us rent it for Halloween. We could fix it up great, making it something that our friends would talk about for years. But we were trying to find some way to approach the owner. We figured you couldn’t just walk up to a total stranger and ask him if you can rent your home for a day. Bobby and I had been working on this for a couple of weeks, checking records to see who owned the place, verifying that the owner lived there, and checking any records we could about him. But we came up with nothing, nada. There had to be something.

He wasn’t a member of any club that we knew about. He never seemed to leave his house except to go grocery shopping. And that was another strange thing, he only left his house at night. Plus he always came out dressed in black clothes. Nowadays, that is popular dress, but for someone his age, it isn’t. He didn’t seem like someone who was modern in any way. He also had an eastern European accent. That sent us off on a different research quest.

Willie finally said, “Hey, I don’t have a problem approaching strangers. Leave it to me to talk to the guy and check out the place.”
